The NPC held a workshop entitled “Powers and Limits of Pluralism” at the Kogalle Beach Hotel in Galle on Friday 14th August 2009.


National Peace Council holds seminar on IDPs in the North: Challenges and Opportunities

On Sunday the 26th of July, National Peace Council of Sri Lanka held a seminar on the subject of ‘IDPs in the North: Challenges and Opportunities’.

The event was chaired by Mr. Joe William, Chairman of the Board, National Peace Council.  As the first speaker, he discussed Sri Lanka’s history of displacement and introduced the challenges faced by IDPs as well as the authorities in resolving the situation.  

The next speaker was Ven. Buddhiyagama Chandraratne Thero, President of the Vanni Cultural Foundation, Puttulam.  He spoke of the large number of Muslims and Tamils who have been displaced since 1990. He went on to discuss the issues faced by IDPs and probable solutions for the same.


NPC organizes a brainstorming session on 'Widening the Space for Civil Society'

The National Peace Council organized a brainstorming event entitled “Widening the Space for Civil Society” on Monday 17th August.  The seminar aimed to provide an open forum for discussion about the action that can be taken by members of civil society in this post-war phase to ensure a peaceful future for Sri Lanka. 


National Peace Council mourns the death of Mr. Kingsley Rodrigo

Mr. Kingsley Rodrigo, former member of Governing Council of National Peace Council, Sri Lanka, passed away in the evening of August 16. Mr. Rodrigo was also the founder of local election monitoring body, PAFFREL. He was of age 55 years at the time of his death, and had been ailing for six months. He died of a heart attack, his family said.

The remains were kept at Jayaratne Funeral Parlour at Borella on the 17th, 18th and 19th  for the public to pay their last respects.

The funeral took place on August 20 at Borella Cemetery.

NPC conducts workshop on 17th amendment


 National Peace Council of Sri Lanka conducted a workshop on 17th amendment on Saturday the 11th July, 2009 in Trincomalee. The event took place at the main event hall at Club Oceanic Hotel in Trincomalee. Dr.S.I. Keethapongalon, Head of the Department of Political science at University of Colombo, and Mr. S.G.Punchihewa, Senior Lawyer, were invited as resource persons.


Workshop on Practicing Non-Violence as Means for Peace and Reconciliation

A three day workshop was held at Ecumenical Centre in Colombo on 11, 12, 13 June 2010. A total of 30 social activists participated at this workshop from 14 districts.


Residential Workshop on “Application of Human Rights for Social Betterment” Uppuveli, 4 – 6 June 2010

A three day workshop was held at the Human Resource Development Centre of the Ministry of Education in Trincomalee. The target group was A/L students chosen from 17 1AB schools from Kantale, Muttur, Kinniya and Trincomalee zonal education areas, selected based on their performance at the Human Rights quiz held in 2009. 34 students participated from 13 schools comprising of 12 Sinhalese, 3 Tamils and 19 Muslim students.  

A Seminar on “IDPs in the North" and the launch of 'Thulava' , a monthly news paper by NPC

National Peace Council is organizing a seminar on “IDPs in the North:  Challenges and Opportunities” together with the launch of 'Thulava' a monthly newspaper devoted to issues of Power Sharing, on Tuesday July 28, 2009. The event will take place at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Conference Hall, at 19 Horton Place, Colombo 7, between 2 PM - 5 PM.


NPC supports protests against attacks on senior journalist Poddala Jayantha

 On Wednesday the 10th of June, the media organizations around the nation, collectively organized a protest campaign against the attack on senior journalist Mr. Poddala Jayantha, the secretary of the Working Journalists’ Association that was carried outon the 1st of this month, as well as against the suppression of the media.



Training Workshop on Power Sharing

National Peace Council of Sri Lanka conducted a workshop on Power Sharing for its staff on ninth of June, 2009, Tuesday. The purpose was to equip the staffs, who work on Power Sharing projects, with deeper understanding of the issues and finer points of the same.
