TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS

A half day training program was conducted on 14th August, in  Matara for a selected group of Sunday school teachers - representing all four main religions - Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.  The training was on humanitarian principles and values taught in all religions.  The main objectives of the training were to increase the knowledge of Sunday school teachers regarding the importance of moral values that each religious doctrine conveys about pluralistic thinking and to. Also, they are expected to endeavor to 'model' and demonstrate the values in interaction with religious teachers of other religions.

NORTH SOUTH YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM - GAMPAHA

An exchange program took place in Gampaha from 04th to 07th October 2010 organized by the District Action committee with the support of NPC. A total no of 60 youth came together at Tothilagahawatta village of Divulapitiya divisional secretariat area. The youth represented Jaffna, Gampaha, Kandy, kurunegala, Kegalle, Galle, Matara, and Hambantota districts.

IMPROVING POWER-SHARING KNOWLEDGE OF CBO REPRESENTATIVES IN NUWARAELIYA - 14th August 2010

The workshop focused on improving the power-sharing knowledge of CBO representative’s in light of the role played by Provincial Councils and the Central Government. The workshop was conducted through a discussion based forum that simulated each participants own insight on the issue.

NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION FOR NPC STAFF - 3rd & 4th August 2010

A two-day two workshops in Sinhala and English medium on Non Violent Communication (NVC) was organized by the NPC in collaboration with the Centre for Communication Training (CCT).  The objectives of conducting this workshop were strengthening staff members' morale and interpersonal communication skills, to change their attitudes, behavior, and way of communicating with others they interact, to create a harmonious, friendly and supportive work environment at NPC. The workshop was, held at Global Towers, Colombo 06, on 3 and 4 August, 2010.

Power-Sharing Workshop in Puttlam, 17th July 2010

On July 17, 2010 the National Peace Council (NPC) held a workshop on power-sharing for leaders of community based organizations (CBO) in Puttlam.  Prior to the workshop, NPC recognized that the lack of knowledge about power-sharing was a main cause for people to remain silent without claiming for their rights. Therefore, the Peace Education Unit of the NPC conducted the workshop in order to further educate civil society leaders and CBO leaders in six districts in the North, East and South on the benefits of power-sharing.

A three day workshop was held at Ecumenical Centre in Colombo on 11, 12, 13 June 2010. A total of 30 social activists participated at this workshop from 14 districts.

WORKSHOP ON ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE ON PLURALISM

A three day workshop was organized by the Peace Education team of the NPC in the context of ongoing efforts to improve and expand the knowledge and understanding of the National Pluralism Committee on pluralism; to independently identify and address the obstacles to pluralism and to apply the principles of pluralism in their communities and in the political arena. The workshop was held at Ecumenical Center, Colombo 6, on 2nd, 3rd  and 4th  July 2010.

Residential Workshop on “Application of Human Rights for Social Betterment” Uppuveli, 4 – 6 June 2010

A three day workshop was held at the Human Resource Development Centre of the Ministry of Education in Trincomalee. The target group was A/L students chosen from 17 1AB schools from Kantale, Muttur, Kinniya and Trincomalee zonal education areas, selected based on their performance at the Human Rights quiz held in 2009. 34 students participated from 13 schools comprising of 12 Sinhalese, 3 Tamils and 19 Muslim students.

Workshop on “Peace Building through Power Sharing” Tangalle, June 27th 2010

A one day workshop was held in Tangalle to create support for power sharing policies among CBO representatives and provide motivation and ability to further disseminate the knowledge in the Hambantota District with a combined initiative between Peace Education and Peace Mobilization Units as a part of the broader theme of ‘Peace Building through power sharing’ at NPC.
