WORKSHOP ON NON VIOLENT COMMUNICATION- STAGE II

Stage II of the training workshop on Non violent Communication (NVC) for the NPC staff was conducted by the Center for Communication Training (CCT), in collaboration with the Peace Education Unit of NPC, from the 3rd to the 4th of November, 2010. The workshop was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI). A total of 18 NPC staff members attended the training workshop which was conducted in the Sinhala medium.

The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Shivantha Ratnayake and Ramanusha Poopalasingham, from the Centre for Communication Training (CCT) and was also supported by Mr. Sabry, Senior Program Officer (CCT).

Effectiveness
The participants were able to refresh their memory on the four steps of NVC and VC as well as the material covered during the previous workshop. They also learned about the process of NVC, using the four components of observation, feelings, needs and requests in the three following modes:
1. Connecting and understanding one’s self
2. Expressing honestly without blame or judgment
3. Listening to others actively and empathically

The participants gained sufficient knowledge and information on the use of empathy skills through several practical incidents as well as methods of supporting the emergence of mutual understanding and trust with each other in the work place and in their personal life. The workshop offered integrated practices including deep/ empathic listening, quality connection and attention which are effective for personal and professional development.

Outcome
Participants formed three practice groups to practice NVC, elected their leaders and fix dates and times for their first meetings.
